“For decades, the federal health programs that retirees and people with disabilities depend on have been ably administered by officials under both Democratic and Republican presidents. However, the proposed radical cutbacks at the Health and Human Services Department by the Trump administration places the delivery of federal health programs in jeopardy. HHS also has announced that it will shutter the agency that manages crucial Older Americans Act programs and divide its responsibility into two separate offices with no prior experience in this area. This administration has demonstrated through its actions at other agencies (the Social Security Administration, in particular) a reckless disregard for the interests of the public in favor of slashing operations and staff in the name ‘efficiency.’ So far, all they have done is create chaos and confusion — and disrupted the operation of the programs that seniors and the disabled rely upon. For these reasons, we view the plans to downsize HHS under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. with alarm.” – Max Richtman, President and CEO, National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare
