Residents of Richmond will have a chance to learn the facts about Social Security — especially what it means to communities of color — at a public town hall on Tuesday, June 27th, 5:30-7:00 p.m., at the Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia. The town hall, entitled “Social Security: Here Today, Here Tomorrow; Securing a Financial Future Within the Black Community” is presented by the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, and sponsored by AARP Virginia, as part of a new, national public education campaign.
“Social Security is a financial lifeline to millions of American seniors, but it is especially crucial to the Black community. Black Americans traditionally rely on Social Security for monthly income more than other groups do, due to wage and job discrimination, diminishing employer-provided pensions, and challenges in saving for retirement. Like all workers, Black Americans pay into Social Security with every paycheck. All workers deserve to know that Social Security is here for them now — and will be here for them tomorrow. This town hall will debunk myths about the program and provide answers to important questions about Social Security benefits,” said Max Richtman, President and CEO of the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare.
The Richmond town hall will be moderated by Reba Hollingsworth of WTVR-TV (CBS 6), Richmond. Panelists include:

Representatives of the Social Security Administration will be on hand to answer attendees’ questions about their Social Security benefits – current or future, along with staff from the office of U.S. Rep. Rob Wittman. The event will begin with games and refreshments, followed by the town hall forum:

This is the first in a series of “Social Security: Here Today, Here Tomorrow,” town halls across the country. Other town halls will take place in Philadelphia, PA, Lansing, MI, Milwaukee, WI, and Las Vegas, NV between July and October, 2023.
The national campaign is presented by the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare (a nonprofit advocacy group) and sponsored by AARP.
