“Dropping the Social Security cuts from the highway bill is the right thing to do for the millions of Americans who expect their Social Security contributions to stay in the program. Using Social Security as Congress’ ATM to fund unrelated programs takes earned benefits away from retirees, people with disabilities and their families already living on modest incomes. This is the third time in less than a year that Congress has attempted to use funding from Social Security and/or Medicare to pay for a completely unrelated issue. Last year Congress voted to extend the Medicare sequester cuts into 2024 to cover a reversal of cost-of-living cuts to veterans' pension benefits. This summer Medicare was cut again to help pay for the Trade bill. Then came this flawed highway bill. Any Congressional strategy that threatens America’s most successful retirement and health security programs and the average Americans who depend on them must be stopped.
